Hollywood and History: Stepping into Hollywood’s Golden Age

Join us for a toe-tapping celebration of Foot Notes: Shoes, Symbolism, and Society as chief librarian Frank Luca and digitization specialist Hannah Gauthier delve into the music and historical context of Hollywood’s shoe-centered Golden Age films. Enjoy clips from a variety of films, including Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush (1925), MGM’s comedy short New Shoes (1936), and the Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse musical romantic comedy Silk Stockings (1957), among others.

The Geneva Window: A Centenary Celebration

Celebrate a treasured icon of The Wolfsonian’s collection—Harry Clarke’s provocative stained-glass Geneva Window—with an evening of conversation and dance held a century after its commission. The evening begins with a talk by Clarke scholar Róisín Kennedy of University College Dublin, followed by Pioneer Winter Collective’s this beauty that will pass, a new performance responding to the window’s literary scenes and themes of beauty, desire, censorship, and impermanence.

Miami Beach Culture Crawl | Knight Labs Public Opening

Enjoy The Wolfsonian during the Miami Beach Culture Crawl, featuring hourly tours of Foot Notes: Shoes, Symbolism, and Society beginning at 6:15pm. Visitors can also explore the new Knight Labs on the 3rd and 4th floors, where digital interactives offer new ways to engage with The Wolfsonian’s collection.

Howl-O-Ween at The Wolf—Once Upon a Time
Sunday, October 18 | 1–4pm | On-site
Wander into a world of magic and mystery at The Wolfsonian’s fourth-annual Howl-O-Ween! Inspired by Cinderella’s glass slippers in Foot Notes: Shoes, Symbolism, and Society, this multigenerational celebration brings imagination to life through interactive story time and a craft activity led by Miami-based fiber artist Pangea Kali Virga. Play bingo for prizes, try costumed figure drawing, enjoy sweet treats, and explore collection fairy tales and folklore during the library open house.

About The Wolfsonian–Florida International University
The Wolfsonian–FIU is a museum, library, and research center that uses objects to illustrate the persuasive power of art and design, to explore what it means to be modern, and to tell the story of social, historical, and technological changes that have transformed our world. The collection comprises more than 200,000 objects dating from 1850 to 1950—the height of the Industrial Revolution through the aftermath of the Second World War—in a variety of media including furniture; industrial-design objects; works in glass, ceramics, and metal; rare books; periodicals; ephemera; works on paper; paintings; textiles; and medals.
